I just bought a 43" TCL a week or two ago for $229. But now Micro Center Is offering an LG 49" for just $20 more. I haven’t opened the TCL, and it’s from Costco so I won’t have any trouble returning it. They’re both 4K Smart TVs, so the only differences are size and brand (and price, of course...) The TCL is still in the box.
Should I go ahead and get the bigger set with the better brand name? For $20 it seems worth it even if I have to do the return shuffle. Hopefully Costco will also take back the extended warranty, which I haven’t filled out...

I have seen mixed reviews on TCL TVs. Seem to be great value for money but certain models have more problems than others. very nearly pulled the trigger on one but found a great deal on a comparable 65" LG last black Friday and stuck with LG, previous TV was a 42" LG non-smart TV.

Yes do the upgrade! I ended up buying a Samsung 50" 4k and have no regrets.

Always go with a bigger TV.

From recent reviews I’ve read (on TVs in general, not these specific models), the 43" size bracket is kind of lackluster in quality and the larger screens usually have better panels and image quality.
I just switched from a 2 year old 43" to a 6 month old 50" and while both were originally around the ~$5 00 budget, the larger panel is clearly a step above, even though display tech hasn’t made any huge leaps in that segment over that time-span. So I’d probably go for the larger display based on that experience and reading about others seemingly finding the same thing.

I have a 43" LG which is probably the exact model line
you’re looking at. Pluses - pretty good picture, good configurability, good apps,
etc. etc. Minuses, not a whole lot of room for really nerdy fine-tuning of color settings and the like, not earth-shakingly bright. So, the LG quality in a bit bigger size sounds like a winner.

Sounds like a good idea to me. The handful of friends/family I know with LGs have gotten along with them pretty well. That said, it couldn’t hurt to check some reviews first. I found
rtings
to be immensely helpful last time I was in the market for a TV
.

All I can say about TCL is that my parents have a 2017 55"er, and while the picture is fine and the software seems fine, the remote doesn’t register half the time, and sending surround sound via the optical out introduces a noticeable delay, with no way to delay video to sync (they would be fine with the latency).

I really hate the way Samsung displays ads on mine, and frequently moves the TV+ app to be the first input after I’ve removed it. All the worse because instead of putting their ads and services in dead-space, they put inline with the content I actually care about, so it gets in the way. I’d like to feel more like I own my TV. Other than that, it seems good to me, but I wouldn’t buy it again just because of the invasive advertising.

That’s odd, my samsung doesn’t
display advertisements
as far as I can tell unless I’m selecting the app or source for video.

On mine the interface is like this:
It plops in an advertising tile between Apps and TV+. And as I said, it keeps adding back the TV+ tile even after I remove it (I suspect it adds it back anytime there’s a software update, or if you accidentally start TV+)

always get the larger set, you’ll never regret it...getting the smaller on you will.
